Our guide to squared sunglasses – Part 1

Square sunglasses seemed to appear on the market late in the 40′, right after the war, once the hand manufacturers had the chance to explore new shapes. Mass production wasn’t so spread at the time, so the opportunity to create something original was still a risk for those working on every single shade.

Kopajos has taken from the past this specialization, marking the attention for details and the relentless research on its designs.

The 1970s decade signed the oversized, square sunglasses trend that came back strongly last year and still defines the direction for the current season.

It’s important to emphasize that “square sunglasses” include various geometric shapes: rectangular, square, hexagonal, etc.; all these frames have in common sharp angles, offering solid lines to the look.

With more than 15 different square designs, we try to respond to various tendencies: sometimes fashion-related, but primarily for specific needs from average users and sunglasses experts.

Let’s have an insight into some designs of our collection. Through this guide, you’ll also know the origin of the name of our goggles.

1. Sandor

Sandor is clearly a mix between a square and an aviator frame. Made of titanium provided with flexible nose pads, these sunglasses have very straight lines and sharp angles. The spring hinge makes the arms stretchy, improving the fit. These spectacles are suitable for optical prescription too. Black, bronze, gold, and silver shapes are available with black, dark green, mirrored, and light lenses.

We have had the opportunity to show Sandor during the 2022 Spring-Summer ready-to-wear collection by the Italian fashion designer Giambattista Valli. International models wore unique outfits completed with our sunglasses, ribbons, and hats on the catwalk. Light pink, metallic red, shiny gold, angelic white reflect Valli’s romantic woman concept. Our spectacles were on the palette to enhance these sylph figures.

Sandor appeared in the 1977 James Bond movie, “The Spy who loved me” as a criminal. Bond killed Sandor, making him plummet in a courtyard. Milton Reid portrayed the character (he previously played a guard of Julius No). Sandor is available here: www.kopajos.com/product/Sandor.

2. Glory Cricket

The Glory Cricket lenses are partially embedded in the rim-eye lock; a nylon wire keeps the shades stuck at the titanium frame. The nose pads are flexible, and our spring hinges make the arms elastic.

Available frames are black, matt gold and silver, metal yellow and red. Lenses cannot be replaced, decreasing the chance for customization, but there are many options to choose from.

3. Mr. Osato

Mr. Osato’s new edition is now available. The new design now has a renovated ergonomic and more flexible temple. The shape is still squared with trapezoid lenses, edgy on angles. This acetate frame doesn’t have nosepads. Mr. Osato is suitable for an optical prescription.

Mr. Osato is the central antagonist of the 1967 James Bond movie, “You only live twice.” He’s a member of the SPECTRE organization. Japanese actor Teru Shimada portrayed this character.

4. Honey Ryder

Honey Ryder are the sunnies to watch in 2022. The 70’s trend that spread oversized shades around the world is back in combination with the ongoing square fashion tendency in the sunglasses world.

Honey Ryder’s design is kinda vintage and highly detailed, with our “meandros” running all over the metal frame. It is suitable for optical prescriptions. The stretchy nosepads and the flexible arms grant a comfortable fit.

This name has been inspired by Honey Ryder (Dr. No, 1962), regarded as the very first Bond Girl. Her iconic first appearance, emerging from the ocean with a white bikini, is considered a cinema classic. In the film, she is played by Swiss actress Ursula Andress.

5. Zao

The long, thin bridge of Zao is jointed with the metal shape; it keeps the sunglasses together. The frame is nicely decorated with the greek “mesandros” and the slim fish on both the flexible arms, those moving with a spring hinge. The acetate rim-eye square rings make Zao a combination of diverse elements. The nose pads can be efficiently stretched. Zao is suitable for optical prescriptions.

Frames available are gold and silver. Acetate square parts are black, leopard, navy blue, grey, tarta dark, tarta ivory, and tiffany.

These sunglasses name are inspired by Tang Lin Zao, one of the primary antagonists from the 2002 movie “Die Another Day.” A terrorist from North Korea, he reflects the nature we imagine for our square spectacles: harsh and a little castling.

6. Prof. Dent

Prof. Dent is the first metal square design of the Kopajos collection, with rectangular lenses. Nosepads are still and well screwed to the frame. Although they can’t be moved, the fit is comfortable, thanks to a 2.5mm length. Spring hinges make the arms flexible. Prof. Dent is suitable for optical prescriptions.

The character that inspired this name is Professor R. J. Dent, the main antagonist in Dr. No film  (1962). He was a fictional professional geologist who worked as a henchman for Dr. Julius No. Bond fought with him eventually killed Dent with a double gunshot. Prof. Dent was portrayed by the late British actor Anthony Dawson.

As previously stated, square sunglasses are an undisputed trend this year, continuing the popular trend of the past summer. Of course, the fashion market is modernized designs if compared to those of a year ago. Are we going to embrace a renovated wayfarer trend? Do you know the difference between a square and a wayfarer shape?

In summer 2022, they are no longer so small and narrow but broader and often with thick frames made of acetate. Square sunglasses look good on round face shapes. The square edges of these glasses balance the roundness of the face, giving a harmonious effect. Rectangular spectacles instead balance out more long faces.
